As a mom to two young kids and a long-distance runner, my feet are usually overworked and tired. Between chasing my little ones and logging miles, I'm on the hunt for supportive walking sandals that can give my feet some much-needed relief, yet still look amazing. Luckily, as a fitness editor, I get to test plenty, wearing them on uneven terrain and muddy paths, and during my day-to-day activities. I'm looking for highly durable, extremely comfy, and seriously supportive sandals that can stand up to spilled ice cream, splashes in the mud, and are stable enough to handle all kinds of uneven terrain.

How We Tested
To find the best walking sandals for women, we first consulted three foot experts to learn more about what key features to look for and avoid when shopping. We then put 45 walking sandals to the test, wearing them for 3+ months on various terrains, including pavement, concrete, sand, trails, and more. We walked an average of 18 miles daily during the testing period, evaluating each pair of walking sandals for their fit, design, stability, responsiveness, cushioning, comfort, quality, and value to find the top options. When we test walking sandals, we keep the following key criteria in mind.
- Fit: When trying each sandal on for the first time, we evaluate its initial fit—is it too tight, too loose, or just right? We also consider if the sizing is accurate and whether we’d recommend sizing up or down. During our test walks, we note if our toes or heels hang over the edge of the shoe and if our feet slide around. We prioritize sandals that offer a snug, supportive fit for extended wear and walking.
- Stability: As we continue to walk in each pair, we carefully note any signs of knee or ankle instability. We consider whether the midsole offers enough shock absorption and support for safe and smooth heel-to-toe transitions across varied terrains. We only recommend sandals that help us feel confident on all surfaces.
- Responsiveness: Next, we assess each sandal’s level of responsiveness, or how effectively it helps propel us forward with each stride. During walks, we consider whether the sandal offers a slow or quick bounce-back during transitions. We select sandals with springy responsiveness to enhance movements and reduce fatigue.
- Cushioning: We evaluate the thickness and density of each sandal’s midsole to determine its level of comfort and support. As we walk, we assess whether the shoe feels plush or firm and how this affects our experience. We also pay attention to any pressure points and signs of rubbing or chafing.
- Comfort: Your walking sandals obviously need to be comfortable enough to walk in, so we consider several factors. In testing, we ask ourselves: Is there enough arch support? Are there any signs of chafing or blistering? Do our feet overheat due to a lack of breathability? Our final list only includes sandals that we found comfortable for all-day wear and extended walks.
- Quality: Along with comfort, quality is essential. At the beginning of testing, we thoroughly inspect the sandals for any initial damage or quality concerns. We also perform a bend test to gauge the shoes' flexibility, ensuring they neither bend too easily nor lack flexibility. As testing progresses, we continue to evaluate the shoes for any signs of wear and tear (like rips, loose treads, broken buckles, and more).
- Value: Finally, after testing is complete, we look at the price of each sandal to assign a fair value score. Drawing from our experience, we consider whether the sandals are reasonably priced and whether we would purchase them at their regular price or during a sale. Sandals only earn a spot on our list if they meet our standards for affordability and quality. And we only include options we would personally buy or recommend to a friend.
We tested the walking sandals on a variety of terrains to see how they performed. Verywell Fit
-
What to Look For
- Arch Support: The level of arch support you need depends on your foot type. If you have flat feet, opt for sandals with ample arch support. If you have normal arches, choose a pair that’s designed to maintain your natural alignment. If you’re unsure how much arch support is right for you, prioritize comfort first, Tarr says. And always avoid sandals with a completely flat footbed, as they’ll lack necessary support, says podiatrist Anne Sharkey, DPM.
- Adjustability: Finding adjustable walking sandals is key to getting a comfortable, personalized fit. Look for options that offer features such as buckles, hook-and-loop closures, bungee systems, or laces that are user-friendly and easy to adjust.
- Heel Straps: You may also want to consider choosing sandals with a heel strap for added stability when walking. Sandals without heel straps may lead you to overwork your feet as your toes grip the shoe for support. Opting for sandals with a heel strap can alleviate this issue, reducing foot fatigue and providing a more comfortable walking experience.
- Traction: Look for sandals with good traction that will keep you stable on different surfaces and terrains. This makes them safer to wear—plus, you won’t have to worry that they’ll start to slide off while you’re walking, Tarr says. Keep in mind that the stiffer and deeper the tread on the outsole, the more traction the shoe will provide.
- Durability: Make sure your sandals can withstand all the hiking, trekking, climbing, and sightseeing you’ll want to do while wearing them. One way to ensure your sandals last is to select ones made with durable materials, like leather or synthetics.

Why We Love Them
Merrell’s Terran 4 Slides feature a slip-in style and adjustable straps that make them easy to wear and comfortable. We love the plush cushioning and soft microfiber insole, and found they fit perfectly thanks to the hook-and-loop strap across the top. Since we could adjust the strap, we had no issues with rubbing or chafing. And the colorful accent strap makes them versatile enough to wear with a variety of outfit choices.
These sandals provide a smooth transition with each step, and the rugged outsole provides plenty of traction on all types of surfaces. We felt like we could wear these sandals for anything from a casual workday to a night out. They’re breathable, durable, and high quality, everything you'd expect from a high-quality shoe.
-
Potential Flaws
- We found these sandals fit perfectly and were very comfortable. However, some wearers have noted that the strap across the top is too high and irritates their feet.

Best for anyone who needs plenty of cushioning with an adjustable fit for everyday wear.
-
Why We Love Them
Chaco’s CushZ Toe Loop Extra Cushioned Sandals have a thick sole and adjustable strap, so they’re plenty comfortable for long days on your feet. During testing, we noted the padding made our feet feel energized rather than fatigued. The sandals were soft without being so squishy that we felt unbalanced while wearing them.
The built-in arch support felt nice when we were on our feet all day, and the outsole was just grippy enough to keep us stable, even on wet surfaces. The heel strap is cushioned to prevent irritation on your Achilles tendon, which often happens with other options. Plus, these sandals are quick-drying, supportive, and super comfortable.
-
Potential Flaws
- They aren’t available in half sizes, and the company recommends sizing up. However, our tester sized down and got a good fit. Finding the right size in these might take a few tries.

Who They’re For
Best for walkers who want an everyday sandal at a cost-effective price.
-
Why We Love Them
Teva’s Original Universal Sandals stand out for their fully adjustable design, with multiple hook-and-loop straps to help you find the right fit. Their low-profile style makes them versatile; we seamlessly transitioned from the beach to the yoga studio and just about everywhere in between. Weighing just 6 ounces each, these sandals are the lightest on our list. This, along with their thin cushioning, provides a barely-there feel.
Similar to other Teva sandals we’ve tested, these are treated with a peppermint-based antimicrobial agent that fights odor-causing bacteria. Offering comfort for everyday wear, this pair matched our stride at nearly one-third the cost of comparable options on our list.
-
Potential Flaws
- We love the low-profile, lightweight cushioning, but it may not offer enough support for rough terrain or super long distances.
- While the straps felt stiff at first, they softened and molded to the curves of our feet after a few wears.
Meet Our Testers
One of our testers doesn’t have a car, so she walks to and from most places (about two to three miles daily). Our other tester, who has a history of plantar fasciitis, walks her dog three to four times daily, with at least two of those walks spanning over a mile in distance.

Who They’re For
Best for anyone with plantar fasciitis who needs a stable sandal with plenty of cushioning (that’s also quite stylish).
-
Why We Love Them
When choosing walking shoes for plantar fasciitis, it’s important to prioritize well-cushioned heels, shock absorption, and arch support. That’s why we love ECCO’s Flowt 2 Band Sandals—the heel cup provides a protective base, while the responsive cushioning propels our strides forward. A stretchy top strap also ensures our feet stay securely in place, so there’s no worry of worsening symptoms in these shoes.
One tester, who has plantar fasciitis, found that these shoes helped her walk comfortably and confidently on sidewalks, pavement, and hard floors. Along with ample arch support, they offer a secure and stable fit thanks to the easily adjustable toe and ankle straps. If you don’t want your plantar fasciitis to stop your steps, we highly recommend this pair.
-
Potential Flaws
- We didn’t experience any chafing or irritation, but it’s worth noting that the straps aren’t padded.
- The soles can stain easily, so you’ll want to be conscious of where you’re wearing these and know that they’ll require cleaning.
Meet Our Testers
One of our testers has been recovering from plantar fasciitis and walks two to four miles daily. This sandal caught her eye because of its two simple hook-and-loop straps and neutral design. Our other tester walks about 5,000 steps a day in hilly areas.

Who They’re For
Best for sightseeing in a new city, taking long walks on the beach, or spending hours on your feet.
-
Why We Love Them
Do your shoes stop you from going the extra mile? Teva’s Terra Fi 5 Universal Sandals provide long-lasting comfort for long-distance walking. They feature a contoured footbed that delivers arch support and a curved sole that promotes a natural stride. A front and rear lip also prevents feet from slipping out. Plus, high-traction outsoles help us feel confident and sure-footed on any terrain (even light trails).
Throughout our testing, we appreciated the easily adjustable hook-and-loop closures, which helped us find a customized fit. And although they aren’t as heavily cushioned as other options on our list, these sandals effectively alleviated heel pain for one of our testers. Crafted from durable materials, this pair is ideal for your warm-weather adventures.
-
Potential Flaws
- They don’t come in half sizes, but after some trial and error, we were able to find the right fit.
- The straps feel slightly rough to the touch, but they were not uncomfortable at all throughout testing.
Meet Our Testers
One of our testers has high arches and recently tore their anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), but she still walks about one mile daily while running errands or walking her dog. She enjoys hiking about twice a month, too. Our other tester has high arches and plantar fasciitis and walks an average of 4,000 to 6,000 steps daily.

These sandals combine trendy aesthetics with reliable comfort and stability. There are two adjustable straps that we found really helped secure our feet. We also appreciate how these sandals don’t sacrifice style for comfort. The soles are thick and rugged, providing plenty of cushion and absorbing the shock of every step, even on rocky terrain. The hook-and-loop strap around the ankle helps get a snug fit, and the buckles and sole are very durable, so these sandals will last. We noted no wear and tear at all during our testing period.
The flat sole does well on smooth, even surfaces and provides plenty of stability. We also found that the insole started to form to our feet the more we wore the sandals. Thanks to the soft leather straps, we didn't experience any rubbing or chafing. Plus, the foam insole felt cushioned and comfy under our feet.

Who They're For
Best for anyone wanting a light, versatile pair of sandals for camping, hiking, travel, daily errands, and more.
-
Why We Love Them
We love the adjustable straps on Teva’s Hurricane XLT2 Sandals to get the perfect fit, whether we’re sightseeing in Europe or running errands around town. We found the heel strap especially helpful in adjusting how our feet sit in the sandal so that the generous arch support feels just right. With the variety of color options, including neutrals, these sandals can pair with anything.
The grippy tread on the outsole is robust enough for plenty of traction on any surface. And we especially loved the heel shock support. It was the right amount of soft cushion for comfort without our feet sinking in and being unstable. The whole sandal is flexible and molds to the ground as you walk, which is great for uneven or rocky terrain.
-
Potential Flaws
- During our test, we noted the rubber footbed became slippery when our feet were sweaty or the sandals got wet, but we appreciated how easy they were to simply rinse off for cleaning.
Meet Our Tester
Our tester walks extensively in urban settings and prefers shoes with wide toe boxes and firm arch support. She has high arches with slight bunions. She was excited to test these sandals because she has worn other Teva models for a long time and was interested in trying a new pair

Who They're For
Best for anyone who needs significant cushioning and arch support.
-
Why We Love Them
Vionic is a trusted brand for orthotic footwear that supports good foot health. And Vionic’s Walk Max Wanderer Sandals have significant arch support that helps keep you aligned and well-balanced. The three adjustable straps are padded for comfort and include colorful accent straps (that we think look super stylish!). We also found that they stayed securely in place thanks to the durable hook-and-loop closures.
The thick heel provides enough cushioning to help us feel like we are wearing a sandal version of a sneaker. Plus, the footbed feels very stable, thanks to its deep heel cup and grippy outsole. These are even a bit springy and responsive, like a running shoe.
-
Potential Flaws
- These sandals have significant arch support and may not be comfortable for anyone with average or flat arches.
Meet Our Tester
Our tester walks regularly and tries to get at least 8,000 steps a day, mostly as exercise. She wears lightweight shoes with thick cushioning. She chose these sandals for our test because they looked comfortable and had a cute style.

Who They're For
Best for on-the-go, busy walkers who need a sandal that can keep up.
-
Why We Love Them
If you enjoy sightseeing, shopping, or simply being out and about, you can’t go wrong with Vivaia's Kiara Sport Sandals. Among the comfiest options we tested, they feel like walking on a cloud—even after hours of wear. Plus, their breathability kept our feet cool and dry, preventing any discomfort from sweaty feet, even on the hottest summer days.
During testing, we felt sure-footed on all terrain thanks to the grippy rubber outsole. We also loved the plush midsole, which made us feel like we were floating. Even better, these sandals maintained the same level of comfort on day 31 as they did on day one—a true testament to their lasting durability.
-
Potential Flaws
- We loved nearly everything about these shoes, including their exceptional durability, but we do wish they were machine-washable for easier care.
Meet Our Tester
Our tester averages 3-5 miles a day of walking for exercise, running errands, and on a walking pad during work. She liked that these sandals looked more like everyday wear rather than hiking sandals, but could still provide plenty of support. She has also had problems with blisters and rubbing with other hiking-style sandals.

Women's Walking Sandals We Also Tested
Although we liked some of these sandals' features, they ultimately didn't meet our expectations.
- We liked the fashionable appearance, versatile style, and adjustable heel strap of Crocs' Brooklyn Low Wedge. However, when we tested them, we noticed the sole was very rigid and stiff and didn't move well with our feet. They also don't have much arch support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are sandals good to walk in?
Yes, as long as you opt for a pair with secure closures or straps and thick soles to protect your feet from uneven terrain and debris. Choosing the right sandals can help relieve pressure in different parts of your feet as you walk short and long distances.
How often should you replace your sandals?
To check the wear on your sandals, place them on a flat surface and check to see how level they look, Tarr suggests. If they sag or lean to one side, this is a sign that the sole has worn down too much.
Is it bad to walk long distances in sandals?
Not necessarily, Tarr says. As long as you feel comfortable and supported, it’s generally fine. However, it’s important to select sandals with a sturdy, supportive structure to prevent discomfort or injury as you go the distance.
